Nani Accounting

Privacy policy

Updated October 17, 2026.

Nani Accounting is made by Adam R. Cagle (“we”). This policy covers the Nani Accounting app and buying a license. It doesn't cover the rest of adamcagle.com, which has its own privacy page.

The short version

Your books stay on your computer. We never receive your books, transactions, reports or documents. The app has no account, no analytics and no tracking. What leaves your computer is what you choose to send: the CPA package you give your CPA, a report you email us, and whatever you let an AI read if you connect one.

Your company file

Everything you put in Nani is stored in one company file on your computer, encrypted with a passphrase you choose. That includes your transactions and statements, your customers and vendors, documents you file, and information about other people you need for taxes, such as contractors' and landlords' names, addresses and taxpayer ID numbers from their W-9s, and your employees' payroll totals.

Nani shows only the last four digits of a taxpayer ID on screen, never writes a full one to its activity log, and never sends one to an AI. A full taxpayer ID leaves your computer only in the CPA package you make, in the 1099 list your CPA needs to file 1099s.

We can't open your company file, recover your passphrase or restore your books. Keep your passphrase and your backups safe.

Backups

Backups are encrypted copies of your company file. They go only to folders you choose, such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or a USB drive, and are covered by those services' own terms.

When Nani goes online

Nani doesn't send usage data, analytics or automatic crash reports.

AI features are your choice

Nani works fully without AI. If you connect an AI, such as Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, or an AI service using your own API key, that AI reads what it asks Nani for: for example transaction descriptions, amounts, payee names and report totals. That information goes to the AI company under your account and their terms and privacy policy, not ours. If you use an AI that runs on your own computer, it stays on your computer.

Bank and card account numbers and full taxpayer ID numbers are never sent to an AI. Nani keeps a record of exactly what each AI was sent, in What was sent. An AI can suggest changes to your books; nothing changes until you approve it.

Crash and error reports

If Nani closes unexpectedly, it offers to write an email to us with the last error lines from its log. Nothing is sent unless you send that email yourself, and you can read and edit it first. It doesn't include your books, though an error message can mention an amount or a name. If you send one, we use it only to fix the problem.

Buying a license

When you buy a license, Stripe processes the payment and collects your name, email address and payment details. We never see your full card number. Your name and email are signed into your license key, and the key is emailed to you through Resend, our email provider. We use your name and email to deliver your key, answer your questions and, if a version needs your attention, tell you about it. We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't send marketing email unless you ask for it.

Stripe keeps the record of your purchase under its own privacy policy; we can see it in our Stripe account. We keep purchase records as long as the law requires for tax and accounting.

The beta

During the free beta there is no license and nothing to buy. Downloading Nani from GitHub is covered by GitHub's privacy policy. If you email us feedback, we use your email only to reply.

Your choices and rights

Your books are entirely yours. During the trial and with a license, you can export every table in your company file. You can delete your books at any time by deleting the file and its backups. To see, correct or delete the purchase information we hold, or for any privacy question, email adamrcagle@gmail.com. Depending on where you live, you may have more rights under local law, such as the GDPR or California's privacy laws; email us and we'll honor them. We don't sell or share personal information for advertising.

Children

Nani is for running a business and isn't meant for children under 16. We don't knowingly collect their information.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date above. If a change affects what leaves your computer, we'll say so in the app before it takes effect.
