Sight restored, prices falling

Good morning. Bronson here. Today doctors restored sight in patients by resetting the biology of the eye, and the cost of useful machine intelligence kept sliding. Nothing arrived with fireworks, which is usually a good sign.

Today in one minute

  • A therapy that resets aging cells restored vision in two of three patients, a first for a new class of medicine.
  • Google's newest model admits when it does not know, and leads a benchmark built on legal, finance, and tax work.
  • OpenAI's mid-tier model matches its flagship within a point at about a quarter of the cost.
  • Cash prices for the leading weight-loss drugs are down roughly 75 percent since 2021.
  • Rwanda's community health workers cut maternal deaths by 30 percent using smartphones.
  • Andreessen Horowitz led an $870 million round for a model that hands decisions straight to software.

Biotech and longevity

Failing sight improves after a cellular reset

Researchers from Life Biosciences reported that three people received a therapy that reprograms aged cells to behave like younger ones, and two show early signs of better vision. It is among the first FDA-approved attempts to treat disease by rejuvenating cells rather than replacing tissue, using a safer version of the technique that won a Nobel Prize in 2012.

AI models and agents

A model built to know what it does not know

Google released Gemini 4 Argon, a model trained for long, complex work in software, law, finance, and cybersecurity. On an independent knowledge test it had the lowest hallucination rate of any model at its level, refusing to answer rather than guessing, and it leads a benchmark that weights finance, legal, and tax work. For now only organizations in Google's cybersecurity program can use it.

Near-flagship smarts at a quarter of the cost

OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol scores within a point of its flagship on an independent intelligence index, at a fraction of the cost per task. Independent tests put a full run of that index at 72 cents with Sol against $3.26 with the flagship, and found no cheaper model at its level of performance.

Abundance and progress

Weight-loss drugs are far cheaper than in 2021

Cash prices for the leading weight-loss drugs have dropped about 75 percent since 2021 as Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly undercut each other for patients paying out of pocket. A month of brand-name Wegovy cost $1,349 at launch and now runs as low as $199 to $349, while the official list price has not moved at all.

Health workers with phones cut maternal deaths by 30 percent

Rwanda says digital tools helped cut maternal mortality by 30 percent over two years. More than 54,000 community health workers now log household visits on smartphones, so high-risk pregnancies surface earlier and reach the right clinic faster.

Business and investing

A cheaper kind of AI that plugs into code

TypeSafe AI raised about $870 million led by Andreessen Horowitz at a $7.5 billion valuation for Jev, a model that returns decisions straight to code as typed values instead of text. a16z says Jev is roughly 100 to 500 times cheaper than frontier models and about 100 times faster at classification, and that it hit a trillion tokens generated within three days of launch.

An assistant that watches your computer and does the chore

Brett Adcock's Hark launched Hark Pro, a proactive assistant that connects to your email, calendar, and cards, then suggests and completes tasks like booking appointments or placing orders. It runs on a cloud computer called Handoff, is free with $20 and $100 tiers, and the company plans a family of devices for 2027 with AT&T connectivity.

Progress is rarely loud. A few patients seeing more clearly, a price that fell while nobody watched: that is the shape of it. Today's small gains become tomorrow's baseline, so keep doing the work that seems too modest to matter.
